How Stress Negatively Affects Acne

The Impacts of Stress on Acne‌

Bhaijamal RA, Nayak SPS. 2023. The impact of stress on acne. Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research and Development. 11(3):143–150.

The purpose of the study in this article is to look more into the links between stress and acne severity. Singaporean students were invited to participate in the study to go through a harsh school examination process and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) was used to compare stress to the acne severity in the students. This article fits my literature review in the discussion of finding out how stress negatively affects acne by having a study done on students to determine if there is a correlation between stress and acne severity. The research in this article differs from other articles in the different methods being used. In this research article adolescent students were being looked at, and the stress levels of boys and girls were being looked at in the study.

The association between stress and acne among female medical students in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Zari S, Alrahmani D. 2017. The association between stress and acne among female medical students in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. 10(1):503–506.

The purpose of the study in this article is to also look more into the links between stress and acne severity. In this article, a study was conducted with 144 6th year female medical students attending King Abdulaziz University where the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS) and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) were also being used to measure the results. This article also fits my literary review by going more in deep with the understanding of negative reactions on acne coming from stress. In this article it’s described how higher stress levels lead to worse breaking out. The way it differs from the other articles is the subjects being used in the research. With the subjects being older than the Singaporean students we can see if age can also play a role in the severity of acne coming with stress.

Oxidative stress and psychiatric morbidity in patients with facial acne

Awad SM, Morsy H, Sayed AA, Mohamed NA, Ezzat GM, Noaman MM. 2017. Oxidative stress and psychiatric morbidity in patients with facial acne. Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. 17(2):203–208.

The purpose of the study in this article is to go further in depth with the study of oxidative stress and psychological aspects on acne with the relationships between oxidative stress, anxiety, depression, and the quality of life in acne patients. Sixty patients with facial acne around 40 years old were included in the study, anxiety and depression were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and acne levels were measured using the Combined Acne Severity Classification. This article fits my literature review by first looking to see if stress has somewhat of an impact on facial acne and then doing the reverse and seeing if acne has any impacts on oxidative stress, anxiety, or depression.  This article differs from the other two articles by not only having an older subject demographic, but also looking into anxiety and depression.
